Naturalization

How and When Can You Become a U.S. Citizen Through Naturalization?

Becoming a U.S. citizen through naturalization is a significant milestone for many green card holders—but the process has become increasingly complex, lengthy, and costly over the years.

In the past, the N-400 Application for Naturalization was just four pages long, and the government filing fee was only $15. Today, the form spans 20 pages, has 18 pages of instructions, and the filing fee is $725. In some USCIS field offices, it may take over a year to receive an interview appointment.

At Next Immigration Service Group, we aim to simplify this process and help you clearly understand the steps and requirements to become a U.S. citizen.

Eligibility Requirements for Naturalization

To qualify for U.S. citizenship through naturalization, you must generally meet the following criteria:

  • Be a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) for at least 5 years, or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen for that duration
  • Have been physically present in the U.S. for at least 50% of the required residency period
  • Demonstrate good moral character
  • Be able to speak, read, and write basic English (exceptions apply for certain age and residency combinations)
  • Pass a U.S. history and government (civics) test
  • Take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States

Certain exceptions and accommodations may apply, particularly for individuals with honorable military service or those with medical conditions that impact their ability to meet specific requirements.
